The second button

It is crazy. It is chaos. It is graduation – Japanese style.

“Those girls are vicious.”

“Did you give the second one away?”

“I’m hoping you’ll accept it.”

Her jaw drops as he hands her a shiny button.

“Will you be my girlfriend?”

  1. Huh – I wasn’t aware of that tradition – and had to wiki it. What a great take on the prompt!

I had to read about this tradition as well. 🙂 I love how you paint this mostly with dialogue. I get a picture of those vicious girls pawing over his buttons!

  3. Oh, it takes so much courage to give your second button to someone. I’m glad he chose right! Or it sounds like he did, at least.

  4. This is so sweet. Loved learning about the tradition – my kids are in a Japanese immersion program in school, so I expect it will be good for me to know! I like how you left the answer a little open-ended: either she says yes, and so *she* has the button, or she says no, and *he* does. It has a little bit of the feel of the children’s game, in a way.
