New Year’s kiss

Of all the places I thought I would end up on New Year’s Eve,

his house would be last on the list. Hearing that I had planned to curl up with a book for the night, a girlfriend had dragged me out to (I quote) “the coolest party ever organised” by her coursemate who so happened to be him. Eyes lingering on me for a second, he had let us in without a word.

A temporary bowling alley had been set up in the garage and soon enough we were playing alongside with the others. I would blame it on the nerves for my poor performance, except it was the intensity of his stare.

“You aren’t using your arm right.” He finally came up behind me when I was preparing for my next swing, his voice then dropping to a whisper. “I miss you.”

I miss you too, I would have said if not for the sudden hype in the room, everyone joining in on the minute countdown to New Year. As everyone exploded into celebration, I tiptoed and dropped a peck on his lips.

“I know,” I replied cheekily, and for the first time in a while, I smiled back at my first love.
